Just look around yourself, and you’ll hardly see a person without a smartphone in their hand or a MacBook on their lap. In fact, we’re so well integrated with our technology that some people claim we’re already turning into cyborgs. And while the idea of carrying the entirety of human knowledge in your left pocket sounds pleasing, it doesn’t come without a price. Our brains are getting used to constant overload with the never-ending flood of texts, images, and cute cat videos (I know you watch them too!).

The result?

Shallow thoughts and the attention span of a goldfish. Our technology makes us dumber. Rather than processing information in-depth, our brains quickly scan snippets of information and form key takeaways before bouncing on the next thing. The average person can’t focus for more than 8.25 seconds (Which is 0.75 sec shorter than the average focus span of a goldfish!) Modern thinking also seriously cripples our ability to perform deep, meaningful work.

But hey, I’m not here to just whine around without proposing you a solution.

Here’s what you can do to reverse the inevitable damage and start helping your brain. Grab a pen, a piece of paper, sit down… and write for 5 minutes.

That’s it.

You can write anything, literally. It doesn’t even have to make sense. Pour your thoughts on paper, describe your recent meal, or write a letter to a friend. The key here is that you have to do it manually. No phone, no keyboard. Pen and paper.

Why?

Because writing “manually” is slow. The average person can type up to 40 words per minute, but they write almost 4 times slower. That’s the secret of this method. It’s forcing your brain to slow down and think deeper thoughts without jumping subjects.

Sounds easy, but it may get tricky.

If you’re anything like me, chances are you’re very used to the constant racket of your brain. And the moment you try to tune the noise down, it’ll do everything to stop you from succeeding. That’s your monkey brain trying to keep you away from taming it. Fight it! With time, you’ll soon notice that your ability to focus has improved, your thoughts are much deeper, more creative, and you’re not so easily distracted. There’s something special in catching your thoughts on paper. In a sense, writing down crystallizes the thought and lets you look at it in a new light. It gives you a chance to recognize your thinking patterns and improve the quality of your thoughts.

So next time when you have some free time sit down, grab a pen, a cup of coffee (or tea), and just write. And if you’d like to make handwriting an inseparable part of your daily life, check out our collection of beautiful, curated journals, and make your writing experience even more enjoyable.

I wish you a wonderful day,

Kasper
